Workaholism

️What is workaholism? In fact, everyone knows this. According to the researchers, it is a mental state that manifests itself in a constant, internal compulsion to perform work or activities that are related to it. A workaholic constantly thinks about his professional duties. There is often a sense of discomfort when something (or someone) prevents him from attending to his work.

Addiction

The condition of this addiction (because it is an addiction!) often causes disruption to family life and negatively affects the health of the individual. Unfortunately – workaholics turn to the doctor for help extremely rarely. Meanwhile – the most important issue in their situation is psychotherapy. Moreover: even if it is applied, it is not at all certain that the workaholic will fully regain control of his behavior.

Better – of course – is prevention. Some of the most effective ways to avoid the threat of workaholism include learning to delegate duties and responsibilities to others, setting fixed hours of availability for family only, and limits on one’s professional availability.

Dealing with workaholism

In a situation where you begin to suspect that you are affected by workaholism, you may consider taking the following steps:

– Ask family, peers and friends if they think you are working too much. In the situation of an affirmative answer – inform them that you will try to change this (you can also ask them for support);
– Answer the question of what purposes your work should serve in your life;
– Try to set your priorities;
– limit the hours allocated for work;
– discover your hobby;
– try to reduce stress levels with exercise or meditation;
– necessarily try to schedule time after work;
– consider consulting a therapist.
