"Protecting the diversity of life on Earth is crucial to global human well-being. With the support of the World Heritage Convention, the most important natural sites enjoy international recognition and receive technical and financial assistance to deal with threats such as agricultural encroachment, alien species and poaching." (UNESCO)

So since the natural world is our heritage, how should we take care of it so that it survives for future generations?

With help here comes UNESCO, or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, which was founded on November 16, 1945. UNESCO is a multi-faceted organization that coordinates activities to develop international cultural, educational and scientific cooperation. By creating standards of cooperation through the establishment of international law in the areas mentioned and mobilizing the international community for joint action, it pursues the goals of international policy in the broadest sense. UNESCO also promotes dialogue between nations and civilizations. The organization promotes the exchange of experiences with the goal of sustainable development, based on the assumption that future generations will be able to benefit from the heritage enjoyed by today’s people.

One of the primary goals of UNESCO is to activate state governments and local communities in the name of the idea of protecting cultural and natural heritage. In addition, the organization seeks to build international cooperation in the fields of science and education.

It is also worth knowing that UNESCO maintains a register of objects of tangible and intangible cultural elements that have been given special protection – the so-called „UNESCO Register”. World Heritage List. The register includes 1154 sites in 167 countries: 897 cultural sites, 218 natural sites and 39 of mixed cultural-natural nature. And how many items on the List are located in Poland? Currently as many as 17! We will zoom in on them in the next post. We encourage you to follow our publications 🔍

The post is part of a series on natural heritage entitled „How to Live? – Naturally!”, which was created to draw attention to the need to protect the Earth’s natural heritage.
